5 FINGERS OF PRAYER

1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C.S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty."
2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.
3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.
4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger, as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.
5. And lastly comes our little finger, the smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you." Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

FOR DAILY PRAYER

MORNING

Faithful God, whose mercies are new to us every morning, we humbly pray that you look upon us in mercy and renew us by your Holy Spirit; keep safe our going out and our coming in and let your blessing remain with us throughout this day; preserve us in your righteousness and grant us a portion in that eternal life which is in Christ Jesus; through whom be glory and praise to you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen

EVENING

Merciful Father, whose guiding hand has brought us to the completion of this day, we humbly pray you to stay with us and shelter us in quiet hours of the night that we who are wearied be the changes and chances of this passing world may rest in your changeless peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

FOR THE CHURCH

Merciful God, we humbly implore you to cast the bright beams of your light upon your church that we, being instructed by the doctrine of the blessed apostles, may walk in the light of your truth and at length attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT

Almighty and everlasting God, of your great mercy in Jesus Christ you have granted us forgiveness of sin and all things pertaining to life and godliness. Therefore send us your Holy Spirit that he may so rule our hearts that we, being ever mindful of your fatherly mercy, may strive to overcome the world and, serving you in holiness and pureness of living, may give you continued thanks for all your goodness; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

FOR THE HOLY MINISTRY

Almighty and everlasting God, whose infinite power alone does great wonders, send down on your ministers and on the congregations committed to their care the healthful spirit of your grace, and that they may please you, pour on them the continual dew of your blessing; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

FOR STEADFAST FAITH

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness and put upon ourselves the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility, that in the last day, when he shall come again in glory to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

FOR GOOD GOVERNMENT

Eternal Lord, Ruler of all, graciously regard those who have been set in positions of authority among us that they may be guided be your Spirit, be high in purpose, wise in counsel, firm in good resolution, and unwavering in duty, that under them we may be governed quietly and peaceably; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

FOR RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP

Lord, keep this nation under your care. Bless the leaders of our land that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and an blessing to the other nations of the earth. Help us provide trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and thus serve you faithfully in our generation to the honor of your holy name; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

FOR OUR COUNTRY

Almighty God, you have given us this good land as our heritage. Grant that we remember your generosity and constantly do your will. Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honorable way of life. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil course of action. Make us who came from many nations with many different languages a united people. Defend our liberties, and give those whom we have entrusted with the authority of government the spirit of wisdom that there may be justice and peace in our land. When time are prosperous let our hearts be thankful; and in troubled times do not let our trust in you fail; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
